The Sheaux Fresh Story

Sheaux Fresh is a family business. In 2002 Big Sheaux started growing food for his wife, their newborn daughter, and friends who were curious about fresh food from his garden.

Two more children, a few cross-country moves, and 9 years later, Big Sheaux sold a case of heirloom tomatoes and eggplant to the head chef of the restaurant where he worked. The hobby became a business and Sheaux Fresh Sustainable Foods was born. 

We sold produce at post-Katrina pop-up farmers markets, directly to local chefs, and via home delivery during the pandemic. We've sold produce on North Claiborne Avenue "under the bridge", at a market in Central City, and we're still delivering monthly produce boxes to two senior centers in New Orleans. We've also provided catering services and curated special events, like "The Legacy of Freedom Summer Supper Series."

The place that we consider our home, where we've spent the most time and have felt most welcomed, is in front of King & Queen Emporium, located at 2500 Bayou Road at North Dorgenois. Nearly every Saturday at 10:00am, rain or shine, cold or hot, you could find our family selling fresh fruit, vegetables, honey, teas, herbs, pickles, preserves, and more. People were always happy to see us and were thankful for access to local produce and locally made products. The biggest complaint was that we were only available on Saturdays and that sometimes the weather made it hard to shop. Many customers asked why we didn't have a store, especially when retail spaces became available on Bayou Road.

For one beautiful, enlightening, challenging year, we had a store at 1434 North Dorgenois Street, just a few steps from Bayou Road. As usual, our whole family was involved. We did our best to make it work, but ultimately, it was not sustainable. We're very thankful for all of our customers and community members who supported and encouraged us. The store is closed but Sheaux Fresh is, as always, is still growing.
